The timer starts with your first key.

How the typing test works

Type the words in the box as fast and as accurately as you can. The one-minute timer starts with your first key, so take your time to get ready. Correct letters turn dark, mistakes turn red, and the highlighted letter is the one to type next. Press Tab at any time to start over with new words.

When the minute is up you get your words per minute (WPM), accuracy, raw WPM and keystrokes per hour. You also see the keys you missed most, with a link to the typing lesson that practices them.

Choose Easy for the most common short words, Medium for everyday words, or Hard for long words with tricky spelling. Want a longer test? Try the 3 minute or 5 minute typing test, which smooth out a lucky or unlucky start.

What is a good typing speed?

SpeedLevelWhat it means
Under 25 WPMBeginnerStill looking at the keyboard for most keys.
25–40 WPMAverageWhere most adults land. Enough for everyday typing.
40–60 WPMGoodComfortable for office work and long emails.
60–80 WPMFastTypical for touch typists who type every day.
80+ WPMVery fastCompetitive typists and transcriptionists.

Accuracy matters as much as speed. At 90% accuracy you spend a big part of every minute fixing mistakes, so aim for 95% or higher before you push for more speed.

How to type faster

  • Keep your fingers on the home row. Rest them on ASDF and JKL; and return there after every key. Start with Course 1: Home Row if this is new.
  • Don't look at the keyboard. It feels slower at first, but it is the only way to get past 40 WPM.
  • Slow down to speed up. Type at a pace where you rarely make mistakes. Speed follows accuracy.
  • Practice a little every day. Ten minutes daily beats an hour once a week. Mix in typing games to keep it fun.

Frequently asked questions

How is WPM calculated?

WPM (words per minute) counts every 5 correctly typed characters, including spaces, as one word, then divides by the minutes you typed. Raw WPM uses every character you typed, right or wrong.

How is accuracy calculated?

Accuracy is the share of your keystrokes that were correct when you pressed them. A mistake you fix with Backspace still counts against accuracy, because you had to spend time correcting it.

What is a good typing speed?

Around 40 WPM is average for adults. 60 WPM or more is fast, and most jobs that list a typing requirement ask for 40–60 WPM with high accuracy.

Can I take the typing test on my phone?

Yes. Tap the text box and your phone keyboard opens. Phone results are saved separately from keyboard results, and there is a dedicated mobile typing test.

Are my results saved?

Your best scores and recent results are saved in your own browser. Nothing is sent to a server and you don't need an account.
